The two builds at a glance
Two different pre-release builds of Emberville have existed, and they are treated differently. The public Steam Next Fest demo ran from October 19, 2026. The Creator & Press Preview came earlier, for journalists and content creators. Which one you played decides whether your save carries over.

- Creator & Press Preview: progress does not carry over.
Public demo progress carries over
The developer’s October 19, 2026 post on what to expect from Early Access confirms that Next Fest demo saves carry over. The authorized demo announcement says public demo progress continues at Early Access launch. FullCleared and Static Multimedia report the same continuity. Several sources repeat the same developer statement.
That means time spent in the public demo is not wasted. You can continue the same progress when Early Access begins on October 27, 2026. There is no need to replay the prologue unless you want to. Many players will simply pick up where they left off.
Creator and press preview saves are excluded
The developer separately states that Creator & Press Preview saves do not carry over. That preview was played before the public demo, and several previews published on September 11, 2026 come from it. If that is the build you played, expect to start fresh. This is a stated exception, not a bug.
It is important not to generalize. The public demo carries over, but not every pre-release build does. Saying all preview saves transfer would be wrong. Check which build you had before relying on your progress.
How to tell which build you played
If you downloaded the demo yourself from the Steam store during the October event, you played the public demo. That is the version most players have. It received patches such as the October 22 Demo Alpha 0.20.18.x update. Those patches belong to the public demo line.
If you received access as a journalist or creator before the public event, you likely played the Creator & Press Preview. Access codes or invitations usually indicate that. When in doubt, ask in the official Discord or Steam discussions. The developer is the best source for confirming your situation.
Keep your demo save while you wait
The simplest advice is not to delete or reset your public demo save before launch. Uninstalling or clearing data could remove the progress you want to keep. Wait until Early Access is installed and you have confirmed your save loads. Then clean up as you like.
Making a backup copy of your save is a sensible precaution. This is our editorial advice rather than an officially tested transfer procedure. We do not list a save folder path, because none was verified for this guide. Steam’s own tools are the safest place to look.
What has not been verified
Several related questions are still open. Moving a save between different stores has not been verified. Detailed manual file steps and a per-item list of what transfers are not confirmed either. Cloud sync behavior was not tested for this guide.
Compatibility with the eventual 1.0 release is also unconfirmed. Early Access is described by the developer as an evolving release, and the full release plan includes co-op and console versions. Whether every Early Access save survives to 1.0 is a separate question. We will update this page if the developer addresses it.
Should you play the demo before launch?
If you are planning to buy Early Access, playing the public demo is a head start. The developer gives about 90 minutes as the average prologue completion time. Finishing it means you can begin Early Access past the opening. That is time saved on launch day.
The demo window was announced for October 19 to 26, 2026. Early Access follows on October 27. If you want your progress to transfer, use the public demo from the Steam store. Our demo page explains how to download it.
If your save does not appear
If your demo progress does not show up after Early Access installs, first confirm you played the public demo. Then make sure both the demo and the full game are updated through Steam. Check the developer’s news feed for any launch notes about saves. These are general steps, not a tested fix.
If the problem remains, report it on the official Discord or the Steam discussions. Include which build you played and your game version. Bugs and save problems belong with the developer, who can actually fix them. This site cannot recover saves.
What the demo covers
The public demo is the game’s prologue, according to the developer’s demo announcement. The developer gives about 90 minutes as the average time to complete it. Previews describe meeting the Wanderer class in the opening and trying early systems such as cooking. That is the progress your save would carry into Early Access.
Because the demo is short, the transfer mainly saves you from replaying the opening. It does not unlock content beyond the prologue on its own. Early Access then continues with the first major biome. Our demo length page explains the 90-minute estimate.
Demo patches and your save
The public demo received a patch on October 22, 2026, listed as Demo Alpha 0.20.18.x. It included fixes such as crafting-station and item-collection changes. Patches like this are part of the public demo line. They do not change which build your save comes from.
Keep the demo updated through Steam while you play. That way your save reflects the latest public build. If something seems wrong after an update, check the patch notes first. Report persistent problems through the official channels with your version number.
Why the preview exception exists
The developer has not published a detailed reason for excluding Creator & Press Preview saves in the collected sources. What is clear is that the preview and the public demo were different builds released at different times. Previews published on September 11, 2026 describe that earlier build. It makes sense that the developer would treat the two separately.
Whatever the reason, the practical effect is the same. Preview players should expect to start again in Early Access. Public demo players can continue. If you played both, keep your public demo save.
Quick summary
Public demo saves carry over, preview saves do not. Keep your public demo save until Early Access confirms it. Cross-store moves and 1.0 compatibility are unverified. Report problems to the developer through official channels.
