Class unlocks are not the same as leveling up
It is easy to assume a new class arrives at a set character level. The official material points somewhere else. The developer’s October demo announcement says progression in weapon and armor categories can unlock classes. That ties new classes to how you play, not just to time spent.
The Steam store describes a combat class system built for flexible character development. Classes can be changed, and each one develops on its own track. So unlocking a class, equipping it and leveling it are three different steps. Keeping them apart avoids a lot of confusion in the menus.
Weapon and armor progress can open classes
Two separate previews describe a bow improving simply because the player kept using it. That fits the developer’s description of weapon categories that grow with use. If class unlocks are linked to those categories, your favorite weapon shapes which options appear next. Armor categories are named in the same announcement.
What is not confirmed is the exact number behind any unlock. No verified source gives a kill count, a mastery level or a full unlock order for the roster. Fan tables that list those numbers have not been checked against a current build. Until they are, treat them as rumors rather than rules.
What the opening showed: the Wanderer class
The clearest class event in the collected evidence is Wanderer. WayTooManyGames reports that Wanderer appeared after a dialogue in the opening. CGMagazine separately describes activating Wanderer after an interaction with a character named Adeos. Two independent hands-on accounts agree on the basic moment.
These were creator-preview builds played before the public demo. The trigger may be worded differently, or shift slightly, in Early Access. What you can rely on is that a class becomes available early and is tied to the story opening. Treat the exact line of dialogue as preview detail, not a guaranteed launch trigger.
Rescued characters widen your options
Emberville is built around rescuing survivors and restoring the town. The developer’s demo announcement says rescues expand gameplay opportunities. That suggests some progress depends on who you free during exploration, not only on combat. It is one reason exploring side paths is worth the time.
The sources do not list which rescued character opens which class. Some rescues may matter for crafting or the town rather than classes. Because that link is unverified, this page does not name trainers or locations. When you rescue someone, check your menus afterward to see what changed.
Read the locked entry’s actual requirement
The most reliable unlock guide is already inside your game. Locked classes and skills normally show the condition they need. That text reflects your installed version, including any patch changes. It beats any list written for an older preview.
Make a habit of noting the requirement before you head out. If it mentions a weapon or armor category, plan to use that equipment. If it mentions a person or place, keep an eye out while exploring. Writing it down helps you spot which activities actually move you forward.
Unlocking, equipping and leveling are separate
Once a class unlocks, it still has to be selected and developed. Previews describe classes progressing individually with their own skills. A WayTooManyGames screenshot of the Wanderer screen even showed a tier reaching level 40. That shows how one class tree looked, not a confirmed cap for every class.
Skill inheritance adds another layer. The Steam page says learned active and passive class skills can be inherited by other classes. That means time spent in one class can still help when you switch. Our skill inheritance page covers how to think about those transfers.
Track your unlocks across patches
The public demo has already been patched, with October 22 notes covering several fixes. Early Access starts October 27, 2026 and is described as an evolving release. Unlock conditions can be tuned during that period. A note with your build number keeps your own records useful.
If you share an unlock condition with friends or online, include the version you saw it in. That small detail turns a claim into something others can check. It also helps when a requirement quietly changes. We will add a full unlock table here only once it can be verified on a current build.
How unlocks connect to the town
Emberville mixes expeditions in the Vitromotus with rebuilding the town above. The developer’s announcements describe exploration, rescues, gathering and crafting all feeding progression. That means progress toward a class may come from more than one activity. A trip spent rescuing people or gathering can still move you forward.
One preview of the prologue ended as the player reached the town, so the later rebuilding loop was not covered there. For that reason, this page does not claim any specific building or town upgrade unlocks a class. If you find such a link in your build, it is worth recording carefully. It would be one of the most useful details to confirm after launch.
Using the demo to see your first unlock
The public Steam demo covers the prologue, which the developer says takes about 90 minutes on average. That is where the Wanderer moment from the previews takes place. Playing it is the quickest way to see how the class menu presents an unlock. It also lets you practice with a weapon before Early Access starts.
Progress from the public Steam Next Fest demo is set to carry into Early Access. Saves from the earlier Creator & Press Preview do not transfer. If you plan to continue your demo character, check which build you played. Our demo save transfer page explains the difference in more detail.
What is still unconfirmed
Several popular questions do not have verified answers yet. These include the full list of classes, the order they unlock in and the exact numbers behind each requirement. Trainer locations and named routes for the whole roster are also unconfirmed. We would rather leave these open than guess.
If you have confirmed a requirement in the current build, a screenshot helps us verify it. Corrections and confirmed details can be sent through our contact page. We will credit you if you like and date the update to your version. That is how this page will grow into a full reference.
